Counselling

Being able to make sense of things, just knowing how everything fitted together and then seeing the changes I can make - that's what helped me. I no longer feel at the mercy of things. Paul

We came thinking our relationship was over and now we have fallen in love all over again. Steve and Mary

All of my relationships have improved and I can function so much better at work. Things with my boss had been heading downhill and this was really the last hope for me. I'm really glad I came. Dave

We are all subject to stress and strain as part of our lives. There are times when these become almost overwhelming: when we are faced with change; retirement; redundancy; loss; relationship problems; job-related difficulties; anxiety, and so on. Sometimes we recognise recurring patterns of behaviour that we would like to change.

Counselling can offer a way forward by givin g support and by helping clients to identify and use their own resources more effectively.

There is a choice between short-term focused work or long-term counselling. In short-term focused counselling, I establish a clear focus and contract with the client. The work is towards an agreed goal within an agreed space of time. Where appropriate, this contract may be extended. With long-term, developmental work, I find it useful to review periodically so as to assess where things are going.

Appointments are normally for an hour per week. The first session is a business meeting to assess client needs and compare these with what counselling can offer. It is an opportunity for the client to ask any questions they may want about counselling or the way I work. Hopefully, by the end of the session, we will have formed an impression of what it would be like to work together and can then go on to decide on how this might happen. My hours are 9am to 7pm. I am accredited by the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy and abide by their code of ethics.

My orientation is humanistic integrative incorporating: person-centred, psychodynamic, systemic, cognitive/behavioural, NLP, solution-focused, transpersonal, existential, narrative and transactional analysis approaches. I work with couples, individuals and groups.
